What is a Ceramic Coating?

In the realm of automotive care and maintenance, there’s a revolutionary product that has been taking the world by storm: Ceramic Coating. This cutting-edge technology has emerged as the ultimate solution for car enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike, offering unparalleled protection and enhancing the appearance of vehicles like never before. But what exactly is ceramic coating, and why has it gained such immense popularity? In this blog post, we’ll delve into the wonders of ceramic coating and explore how it has become a game-changer in the automotive industry.

Understanding Ceramic Coating

Ceramic coating, also known as nano-ceramic coating, is a liquid polymer that is chemically bonded to the surface of a vehicle, whether that is paint, wheels, glass, trim or leather. The primary components of this coating are Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) and Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), which create a strong, protective layer on the car’s surface. When applied correctly, ceramic coating forms a semi-permanent bond, providing long-lasting protection against various external elements.

The Science Behind the Magic

The nano-ceramic particles in the coating create a hydrophobic and oleophobic surface. In simple terms, this means that the coated surface repels water and oils, making it highly resistant to water spots, bird droppings, tree sap, and other contaminants that can damage your vehicle’s paint or trim.

Additionally, the hardness and thickness of the ceramic coating offer excellent resistance to minor scratches and swirl marks, safeguarding the car’s paint from regular wear and tear caused by washing and external factors.

The Benefits of Ceramic Coating

  1. Enhanced Protection: Undoubtedly, the most prominent benefit of ceramic coating is its ability to shield the vehicle’s paint from environmental contaminants, UV rays, oxidation, and chemical stains. This proactive protection helps maintain the glossy finish of your car for an extended period.
  2. Longevity: Unlike traditional wax or sealant, ceramic coating can last for years when properly maintained. Its semi-permanent nature ensures you don’t have to worry about frequent reapplication.
  3. Ease of Cleaning: The hydrophobic surface created by ceramic coating makes washing your car a breeze. Dust, dirt, and grime have a tough time adhering to the treated surface, making it much easier to maintain a clean and spotless appearance.
  4. Enhanced Aesthetics: The ceramic coating adds depth and clarity to the paint, enhancing the overall appearance of the vehicle. It gives your car that freshly waxed look, even months after the initial application.
  5. Preservation of Resale Value: By safeguarding the factory paint, ceramic coating helps maintain the vehicle’s resale value. Potential buyers will appreciate a well-maintained, pristine exterior, which could translate into a higher resale price.
  6. UV Protection: Ceramic coatings provide a degree of protection against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, preventing the paint from fading or degrading over time.

The Application Process

While the benefits of ceramic coating are impressive, the application process is a crucial factor that determines its effectiveness. It is best to have a professional detailer apply the ceramic coating or ensure the correct preparation of the car’s surface and a proper, even application of the product.

The process typically involves a thorough cleaning and decontamination of the vehicle’s paint, followed by a careful application of the ceramic coating in small sections. After the coating is applied, it requires curing time to bond effectively with the paint.

Carbon Collective Ceramic Coatings do not require any special curing processes. We recommend always applying the coating in temperatures above 5 degrees celsius, being cautious of cold panel temperatures in the winter months.

We recommend 2 hours between layers of Ceramic Coating. Whether this is a pairing such as our Molecule 9H Ceramic Coating (Base Layer) and Nero Self-Healing Ceramic Coating (Top Coat) or applying two coats of the same coating (for increased coverage and durability). Two layers can applied to areas which will be hit harder by road grime, dirt and salt such as bumpers, arches, side skirts and bonnets to further safeguard your vehicle.

Once the application process has been complete, we also recommend to not contact wash (hand washing) the vehicle for 7 days after application, to ensure that the ceramic coating has time to naturally cure and harden over this period. Think of this as allowing the surface to cure as you would allow paint, lacquer or glue dry.

Types of Ceramic Coating

Carbon Collective Ceramic Coatings are high performance coatings used and trusted by detailers and enthusiasts worldwide.

Although these are “professional ceramic coatings” this is in relation to their superior durability, abrasion resistance and hydrophobicity. Professional Performance, Easy Application.
